Working as an Aupair in the South of France

During the month of July 2022, right after returning from my academic year in the USA, I decided to embark on my next adventure and take care of a Spanish-French family who had decided to spend a few days with their grandparents. They lived in a small house on the outskirts of Saint-Jean-de-Luz with a pool, a garden, and two adorable little dogs with whom I became very good friends.

The experience itself was very helpful for me to have some calm time since returning from the United States, as up until then, I had continued traveling and hadn’t had a moment for myself. During my experience, I took care of two young children, aged 11 and 6 (though later on, the older sister, aged 13, joined us).

In the mornings, we spoke in English and went to the beach, and in the afternoons, we did all kinds of activities together. Overall, the experience was very good, and I learned a lot of French despite never having spoken it before. However, I highly recommend having a set number of hours and free days marked out each day because often the children would hardly give me a moment of free time during the day.

Highlights of this trip included my day trip to San Sebastián, the beautiful Bayonne Cathedral, and the gardens of Edmond Rostand, the writer of Cyrano de Bergerac.

Durante el mes de Julio de 2022, nada más volver de mi año académico en USA decidí embarcarme en mi siguiente aventura y cuidar de una familia española-francesa que habían decidido pasar unos días con sus abuelos. Estos, vivían en una casita a las afueras de Saint-Jean-de-Luz con una piscina, un jardín y dos perritas adorables de los que me hice muy buena amiga.

La experiencia en sí, me sirvió mucho para tener un tiempo de calma desde la vuelta de Estados Unidos ya que, hasta el momento, había seguido viajando y no había tenido un momento para mí. Durante mi experiencia me hice cargo de dos niños pequeños de 11 y 6 años (aunque luego más tarde, la hermana mayor de 13, vino con nosotros).

Durante las mañanas hablábamos en inglés e íbamos a la playa y por las tardes hacíamos todo tipo de actividades juntos. En general la experiencia fue muy buena y aprendí mucho francés a pesar de no haberlo hablado en mi vida. A pesar de ello, recomiendo mucho tener marcado el número de horas y los días libres a dedicar cada día porque a menudo los niños no me dejaban casi ni un momento del día libre.

Cosas a ver y a destacar de este viaje fueron sin duda mi excursión de un día a San Sebastián, la preciosa catedral de Bayona y los jardines de Edmond Rostand, el escritor de Cyrano de Berjerac.
